HULL CHEVRONS NETBALL CLUB TAKE ON TOP DIVISION SIDE
OAKSWAY 62 - CHEVRONS 33
Hull Chevrons Netball Club knew they were to face a tough challenge on Sunday when they visited National League Division One side, Oaksway in Hartlepool. The fixture was part of the Northern Super League division one but in the National Netball League 3 divisions separate the sides - so Sunday's game could be likened to Hull City AFC taking on the might of Liverpool in the FA Cup !!!
The first quarter of the game saw Chevrons make a very determined start, keeping in touch with Oaksway's speed and well drilled attacks. Oaksway were 'resting' a few of their regulars on the bench but soon brought them on when they were only 16-10 up after the first quarter with Chevrons matching them all down the court and rounding off some superb attacking play with precision shooting from Eve Everson and Rachel Roberts. In the second quarter coach, Pam Dunwell made no team changes, asking her team to work on more positive driving moves towards the circle, feeding from the edge with more of the same courageous defensive play from Milsom, Peacock and Hopkin. Oaksway came out fighting in the second quarter, with more height coming on in the mid court and Chevrons were down 31 -18 at half time.
Half time saw Chevrons team changes with 16 year old Emily Dent coming on at Centre, holding her own admirably against the strong Oaksway mid court, with several England Development Squad players. Oaksway's experience and depth of squad combined with their natural athleticism helped them to pull away to a third quarter score of 48 - 24. The last quarter needed Chevrons to hold on for a point, by ensuring they scored over half of Oaksway's total, Jo Fillingham moved to Wing Attack, replacing Jackie Rabie who had an outstanding game, feeding some excellent balls to the shooters against a majestic Oaksway defence. Chevrons battled on and kept their heads up, refusing to make it easy for Oaksway. The final score was a creditable 62 - 33 to Oaksway.
Coach, Pam Dunwell reflected on a tough game; "We needed to use this Northern League game as experience for our future National League fixtures. We can learn a lot from playing a side like Oaksway and we will be using what we have learned in our training sessions prior up to and beyond our next game against Wyvern. The Hull players showed great determination and carried out our game plan effectively against an immensely talented side, I couldn't have asked more. Jackie Rabie and Emily Dent's performances in particular pleased me, they were not intimidated by their opponents and really dug deep to deliver some inspirational netball."
Hull Chevrons next National Netball League fixture is at home, at the Gemtec Arena on Sunday 16th November, kick off 12.30pm against 'Wyvern' from Bedford. Spectators are welcome for what should be a close, exciting match, there is a small charge for adults £1 and U16s 50p.
HULL CHEVRONS LOSE OUT TO CHESTER
CHEVRONS 22 - CHESTER 33
Hull Chevrons met Chester yesterday in a Northern Super League division one match at The Gemtec Arena. Looking to build on their good start to the season, unbeaten in the Hull and District League, a win against Ipswich in the National League, Chevrons were without key players Jackie Rabie and Jo Fillingham through illness but had Loughborough University students Jenny Hatchett and Alice Nicholas returning for them. The first quarter started well with the new players bedding in well, the score went goal for goal but Chester's height in defence and mid court caused problems for the feed into the circle and despite some strong defending from Peacock and Milsom, Chevrons turnovers were not converted into goals and Chester lead 12 - 7 at the first break.
A pulsating second quarter saw Chevrons come slowly back, winning the quarter by one, with the mid court gradually gelling and providing some strong driving runs down court and effective feeds to the shooters, Everson and Roberts. Cara Hopkin and Jenny Hatchett playing some fast, skillfull netball in centre court linked well with the defence and Chevrons converted some great defensive rebounds to go in at half time only 4 goals down at 12 - 16.
Team changes at half time saw Emily Dent come on at centre, at only 16 years of age Emily gave a dynamic performance and showed what a great prospect for the future she will be. The Chester defence started to dominate and Chevrons began to see the game slip from their grasp, down 16 - 27 at three quarter time, despite some awesome work at goal keeper by Milsom, making the Chester attack work hard for their lead.
Chevrons picked up their game again in the last quarter and it was end to end stuff, but the gap was too big to make up. Showing great determination, Chevrons dug in and played some of the best netball of the game, drawing the final quarter 6 - 6. Final score Hull Chevrons 22 - Chester 33.
Coach, Pam Dunwell reflected on the game "The Northern Super League games gives us the opportunity to integrate our younger players and try out different court combinations in more testing environments. The youngsters did extremely well and I was pleased how quickly Emily, Jenny and Alice picked up the speed of the game. We use these games to plan for our National League matches and with a big game away to London's OPA next Sunday I needed to see specific players in different combinations and give them the benefit of court time at this level. It is great to have Jenny and Alice back from Loughborough, which will give us a wider choice of alternatives and options in mid court."
