The second round of matches in the North of England County Hockey Championships for ladies took place at the Sports Arena last Saturday.
The state of the art aqua based all weather pitch was well used, with ladies from Cheshire, Cumbria, Humberside and Lancashire County squads taking part.
With the winners and runners up going on to play in the English County Championships in June there was much at stake!
Lancashire proved to be head and shoulders above everyone in the first round of games in March, leaving everyone in their wake. This Saturday’s games proved to be a lot tighter with some great matches being fought out. The first match saw Humberside gain a great draw with Lancashire, 2-2 being the result.
Cumbria beat Cheshire 6-0 to set up a great Final with Humberside, both counties needed to win to secure runners-up spot and a place in the Finals.
This match proved to be the "match of the day." Cumbria set their stall out early racing into a 2 goal lead, with Humberside ruing their missed chances. The second half certainly no saunter from the Humberside girls, whose ears were still ringing from a stiff team talk at half time.
Humberside rapidly dispatched 2 goals to draw level, which brought a rousing, exhilarating and spirited barrage from both teams. Humberside finally made amends for their woeful first half performance by striking the winning goal to claim the runners-up spot and make their way down to the Finals at Southgate in June.
Results: Lancashire 2-2 Humberside; Cumbria 6-0 Cheshire; Cumbria 2-3 Humberside
