Football Crazy

Over ten thousand tickets have already been snapped up as the Kingston Communications Stadium prepares to stage its first major international football fixture.

David Platt's England U21's side face their counterparts from Serbia and Montenegro in an international match on Monday 2nd June (kick-off 8.00pm) as part of their build-up to a crucial Euro Qualifier against Slovakia at Sunderland's Stadium of Light eight days later.

Excitement within the City of Hull is rising as football fans look forward to the possibility of seeing the likes of Carlton Cole (Chelsea), Jermain Defoe (West Ham), Shola Ameobi (Newcastle United), and Jermaine Pennant (Arsenal) in action at the KC Stadium.

There are also a couple of local connections with Southampton's Hull-born midfielder David Prutton expected to be involved, along with West Ham goalkeeper Steven Bywater who spent a month on loan with Hull City in November 1999.

Platt is looking forward to taking his team to a new venue and said. "The match against Serbia and Montenegro will be the perfect warm-up for the Slovakia game, with the two teams coming from similar football cultures.

"We are delighted to be playing at Hull's superb new stadium, and hope the local fans will turn up in force to see some top level international football."

England have already played the same opponents, then called Yugoslavia, in a friendly earlier this season.

A 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium saw Shaun Wright-Phillips score his first Under-21 goal for a late equaliser, and Platt is well aware of the opposition's quality.
"As we saw in September last year they are a very accomplished team capable of moments of outstanding individual skill.

"We know it will be a tough match and we will need to be at our best."

England are currently in third spot in Group 7 as they seek to qualify for next year's European Championship, with important encounters against Portugal and Turkey ahead.

Tickets for the game at the KC Stadium are currently on general sale from the stadium ticket office priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

To book, call the ticket hotline or visit the KC Stadium ticket office in person.  The opening times are 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am - midday on Saturdays (Please note that the ticket office is closed on Sundays).
