Hundreds of local music fans showed their support for the region’s music scene last weekend at Blast 2003, a live music event held at the Vulcan Arena.
Blast was the first event of its kind to be held at the new venue and almost 400 people enjoyed over 3 hours of fabulous musical entertainment.
In addition to giving five of the region’s up-and-coming acts who were performing at the event invaluable exposure, the event is sure to have gained them some new fans too!
Fronted by the flamboyant Dan Bryan, icehouse were the first act to grace the stage and their inimitable stage presence, teamed with their catchy, funky disco style of music warmed the crowd up perfectly on what was a cold and wet Autumn evening.
Local singer/songwriter Steve Reed then gave an impromptu acoustic performance of three tracks from his forthcoming CD, ‘And so on and so forth’, which will be officially launched with a gig at The Adelphi, De Grey Street, Hull next Thursday 6th November (8.30pm).
The funky Baseman Family, fronted by the pint-sized Kirsty La Woo, then treated the crowd to their first live performance for nearly two years and illustrated the polished performances and slick grooves which has brought comparisons with The Brand New Heavies.
Next it was the turn of Mr. Mojo to show off the distinctive sound that helped them win last year’s BBC Raw Talent competition. The only band from the region to appear at the Glastonbury Festival earlier this year, Mr Mojo have recently attracted the attention of Mean Fiddler Promotions and didn’t disappoint their fans with a blistering 35 minute set.
The night was rounded off in perfect style by The Raywells who launched into a brilliant new set, that included their double A-side single ‘Hypermania’ and ‘Life’s A Long Song’ - which is currently top selling in HMV Hull (£1.99). The Hull five-piece again proved their star potential and Blast 2003 gave local fans the chance to see them play their new material on the big stage for the first time.
