Nationwide Building Society, an offical partner of the England football team, brought the world’s biggest St. George’s Cross flag to the KC Stadium ahead of Hull City's final match of the season last Saturday, as part of their tour of all Nationwide League and Premiership grounds in England to raise money for Sport Relief.
The 50-foot flag was laid out over seating behind the home team dug-out in the west stand, and former England Manager Peter Taylor added his personal good luck message to the England team.
Peter Gandolfi, Nationwide’s Head of Sports Marketing, said. “The flag will be presented at the England team’s base in Lisbon ahead of Euro 2004, and will be a demonstration to Sven and the squad the level of pride, passion and belief in the nation.”
The Hull City AFC's mascots on the day, Toby Wosskow and brothers Bradley and Jordan Douglas, were also invited to contribute special messages to the England players, and were given their own mini-versions of the flag to take home.
Comic Relief created Sport Relief, in association with BBC Sport, in July 2002 and in doing so brought the world of sport together under one banner for the first time, raising an impressive £14.4 million.
Hull City AFC has donated a signed home shirt from their promotion year, which will be added to the mountain of signed merchandise collected by Nationwide from each club, to be auctioned online at the conclusion of the tour.
