US supergroup R.E.M. will play the Kingston Communications Stadium, Hull on Tuesday 5th July 2005.
The concert forms part of the band's UK leg of their mammoth European tour which kicks off in Lisbon in January and will see them perform in dozens of major Cities, including Paris, Prague and Vienna.
Indeed their appearance at the KC Stadium next summer is one of only a handful of exclusive live outdoor UK dates which will also include Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and London's Hyde Park.
Formed in Georgia, USA in 1980, R.E.M. have become one of the world's most popular live bands over the past three decades.
Enigmatic frontman Michael Stipe's extraordinary lyrics and distinctive voice have been instrumental in winning them legions of die-hard fans and the band still retain massive credibility, with rock critics continuing to heap praise on their work.
Their eagerly awaited date at the KC will give fans an opportunity to see the band’s full live show for the first time in the UK for nearly 6 years.
R.E.M’s commercial breakthrough came back in 1988 with the release of ‘Green’ and was followed up by ‘Out Of Time’ in 1991, which topped both the US and UK album charts.
The accompanying singles, ‘Losing My Religion’, ‘Shiny Happy People’, ‘Near Wild Heaven’ and ‘Radio Song’ gave them further hits in both countries.
The band's third major album ‘Automatic For The People’ - still a regular on ‘best-album-of-all-time‘ charts - was released in ’92, topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and producing a number of singles including the moody ‘Drive’ and unforgettably poignant ‘Everybody Hurts.’
This huge success was followed up a couple of years later with ‘Monster’, a back-to-basics hard rock collection that included 'What's The Frequency, Kenneth?' and attracted further awards.
After a break from the scene, the band re-signed with Warner in 1996 for the largest recording contract advance in history: 80 million dollars for 5 albums, and in the same year, the release of another outstanding collection ‘New Adventures In Hi-Fi’ showed the band's remarkable creative depth.
R.E.M. adapted their style for subsequent albums ‘Up’ - which was far more electronica and possibly the bands most adventurous recording since the mid 80’s, and ‘Reveal’, which delighted fans and critics with its sharp lyrics. Last year, R.E.M. put all their finest work on one album, a timeless collection entitled ‘In Time – The Best of R.E.M.’
R.E.M. release their next single 'Leaving New York' on 27th September, followed by a brand new album on 4th October.
