England’s Under-21s will play their first competitive match of 2005 against Germany in a European Championship qualifier at Hull’s KC Stadium on Friday, 25th March. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
Peter Taylor’s team currently sit top of their European Under-21 Championship qualifying group with three wins and a draw from their first four matches, and will be looking to continue their run against the Germans, who have seven points from three games.
Hull has been the scene of two of the Under-21s’ most dramatic matches in recent years, against Serbia & Montenegro in June 2003 and Holland in February 2004. Ipswich Town’s Darren Bent twice snatched a last-minute winner in 3-2 victories in front of sell-out crowds.
Peter Taylor said. “It’s a great feeling to be bringing an England team to the magnificent KC Stadium. The Hull public create a very special atmosphere and have provided massive support for the Under-21s in the past.
“The Germans are always difficult opponents with outstanding individuals, and I would expect this to be a key encounter in deciding the group.
“We have started our campaign strongly and have a balanced and talented squad. With hopefully a big crowd behind us creating a great atmosphere, we will go into the game with a lot of confidence.”
England Under-21s have played Germany three times since reunification in 1990, winning twice and drawing once. The last encounter was played in Freiburg in August 2001, when Francis Jeffers’s last-gasp winner sealed a 2-1 victory.
