Back in November last year Hull City fans, as part of the club’s centenary celebrations, were invited to nominate the Top 100 Tigers of the century.
Following a magnificent response totalling over 6,000 votes, this weekend the results will be revealed: a list of players who span the club’s 100 years existence, and who between them have amassed nearly 19,000 appearances and scored over 3,000 goals in Hull City’s colours.
Having counted all of the votes, the definitive list of those players who have made their mark in this club’s history, in the game of football in general, but most importantly of all, in the minds of the club’s supporters, will be presented in Saturday’s award winning matchday programme.
Many of those players selected will also be presented to the crowd during the half time interval so that the fans can show their appreciation for the talent and effort that they displayed on behalf of the Tigers over many years.
Just about every decade in the Tiger century being celebrated this season has been covered in the poll. From Jackie Smith and Gordon Wright in the early years of the 20th century, Matt ‘Ginger’ Bell from the 1920's, Bill McNaughton from the 30's, Norman Moore from the 40's, Bill Bradbury from the 50's and so on until arriving at today’s stars who’ve made the list, including Nicky Barmby and Stuart Elliott.
It will come as no surprise to learn that topping the list is Ken Wagstaff, while in second place is Waggy’s ‘partner in crime’ from those heady Tiger days of the 1960's: Chris Chilton.
Both players will of course be in attendance at Saturday's game alongside almost 40 other Tiger Greats who feature in the list including the likes of Brian Marwood, Les Mutrie, Steve McClaren, Billy Whitehurst, Gordon Nisbet, Frank Banks, Andy Davidson and Malcolm Lord.
The definitive list will also appear on the club's official website www.hullcityafc.net
