In his first year at National Grade 1 competition Joe Backhouse, a member of the Hull High Fliers Trampoline Centre of Excellence, has managed to achieve the first of his many goals.
Competing in Cardiff in only his third grade 1 he managed to come 10th out of the whole country and achieved a score of 55.6, which earned him a place in the British National Championships, which are to be held in Birmingham in July.
This success follows straight on the heels of his 5th place in the under 19 boys open at the National Schools Championships in Swansea. On this occasion Joe represented Wolfreton School.
Joe also found fame when the club was asked to provide judges for the Channel 4 programme “The Games”. Officials from Hull High Fliers judged the event and the Centre of Excellence team provided a demonstration to the audience before the show went live on air. Impressed by his ability the producer asked for Joe to demonstrate the difficult skills that the celebrities would have to perform so that the correct technique could be filmed to be included in the programme.
Following in his footsteps Joe’s younger sister Megan (also from Hull High Fliers) who recently qualified to compete at National grade 2, was part of the team representing Carr Lane Junior School. Along with Charlotte Easter (HHF), Lydia Barrett and Olivia Longthorne they went on to achieve 4th place in the under 11 girls open section in the National schools event as well.
The David Lister team consisting of Hull High Fliers members Greg Silby, Andy Abrahamsen and David Boughen did very well to be placed 5th in the under 15 boys event.
Not to be outdone other members of the Centre of Excellence squad have also been playing their part to maintain the high standards of excellence achieved by the Hull High Fliers. Mike Zwahlen and Scott Rowbotham came 1st and 2nd in their events in Harrow, Jodie Rudd came 2nd in her event in Northern Ireland and all three achieved scores which qualified them to compete in the National Grade 2 Championships which are to be held at the Vulcan Arena in November.
Andy Abrahamsen, Jenny Fussey and Mike Williams are all competing in Perth next weekend to try and gain a place at the finals too.
With the success of the National competitors to inspire them, club members competing in Yorkshire events have been inspired too, Sarah Cook, Rebecca Adams, Katie Featherby, Katie Jones, Stephen Johnson, Kieran Joyce, Anthony Bacon, Williams Cogley and Jack Smith have all had recent first places.
