Hull City AFC have been awarded Sportsmatch funding of £49,906 to support an exciting new £100,000 project which will offer sporting and learning opportunities to children aged between 9 and 12 attending schools within the immediate catchment of the KC Stadium.
Sportsmatch Awards are funded by the UK Department for Culture Media & Sport through Sport England. Awards are granted for a variety of community based projects subject to business sponsorships being secured to cover 50 per cent of total project costs.
The Hull City AFC Newington & St. Andrews (NaSA) Community project will involve the club working with a total of over 1500 children from eight local primary schools and two secondary schools over the next two years. Every child will have the opportunity to take part in special sports coaching sessions both within their own school and also at the KC Stadium complex. Another element of the programme will involve special "Learning with the Tigers" sessions at the KC Stadium. These sessions will include tours of the stadium together with a unique mix of learning, lifestyle and fitness related activities.
The NaSA Project has been backed by the SuperStadium Management Company (SMC), the operators of the KC Stadium, which has generously donated £50,000 in sponsorship to match the Sportsmatch funding in order to increase the opportunities for children to take part in the scheme.
The NaSA Project started last week with special sports coaching sessions in each of the participating schools. These initial sessions will be closely followed by the learning and fitness related programmes based at the stadium complex. Each of the individual programmes will last for weeks and the schedule will be repeated four times per year over the lifetime of the project.
Tigers' Chairman Adam Pearson is delighted with news of the award and said: "We have devised a project which will increase access to additional sports coaching and learning opportunities for local youngsters immediately.
"In addition we shall also be working in partnership with a number of local community and voluntary organisations to develop an infrastructure to develop and support locally based sports teams so that young people can continue to participate in sport within their neighbourhood.
"Evidence from elsewhere suggests that by creating these opportunities for the youngsters we can help to promote greater community cohesion within the local area and also contribute towards achieving a reduction in levels of anti-social behaviour by young people.
"I would to thank Sportsmatch for their generous financial support which has allowed us to increase the number of youngsters who will be able to participate in the project."
