The Vulcan Arena staged another successful professional Boxing event earlier in the month as local fighters treated over 600 boxing fans to six action packed bouts during the course of the evening.
The first of the main bouts was between Hull’s 129-fight veteran Tony Booth, and Featherstone’s Paul Bronson.
Booth’s 56-50 points victory over Bronson in their eliminator for the
British Masters cruiserweight put him just one win away from a world title shot. Thirty-three year old Booth now has to win his next fight, at Upton Park, London, on December 5th to obtain the chance to fight for what would be a dream world title.
Booth’s comfortable victory over Bronson came on the same night that
light-heavyweight Mark Ellwood made an impressive return to the ring.
Ellwood’s return was easier, however, as he outclassed Grimsby’s Mike
Duffield in a repeat of their fight for the British Masters
Light-Heavyweight title held at the Vulcan Arena earlier this year.
Forty year-old Ellwood won the fight 60-55 on the ref’s scorecard after
seven months out of the ring. Ellwood made the decision to stage a comeback to help raise funds for his friend Bill Stephenson’s 16 year-old son, who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy.
Ellwood donated his purse from the fight, and with local businessman Brian Bassett chipping in and fans sponsoring the number of punches Ellwood threw, over £1,000 was raised with money still coming in.
The supporting card results were:
Sonny Pollard (Hull) 58-56 Howard Clark (Birmingham)
Luke Teague (Hull) 59-56 William Webster (Birmingham)
Matty Teague (Hull) 60-54 Christian Laight (Nuneaton)
Terry Morrill (Hull) 55-58 Simon Cover (Sheffield)
The Vulcan Arena showed once again that it is the perfect venue to host this type of event, and further professional boxing matches will be announced in the future.
